I think of all the media jobs currently I would probably like to become a film editor. I enjoy editing footage together so naturally a film editor role would be to my liking. According to a website called "Payscale" the average salary of a film editor is £15,887- £36,664. This is apparently the latest average of the amount of money that a film editor would earn as from May the 4th 2017.

This is the website for more details about the average.

Film editing by definition is the art or technique of arranging shots in a sequence. Film editors are responsible for placing clips together and tweaking different technical elements to meet different needs. I am more interested in the creative side of media and I would like to learn more about the ways in which films are put together. In order to become a film editor I would need to gain a diploma from a media course. The course i'm on at the moment in South Thames College is a creative media course of which would help me to become a film editor. After college I would have to go to a university in order to get a degree. A degree would help me become more employable as I would have the experience of editing from university. Despite this, there are many universities which offer degrees for film editing, all with different requirements. Another good way in shaping myself for a variety of media jobs would be to get a media degree. That way I would be able to explore more sides of media and see which ones I truly enjoy. Kingston University offers around 10 different media studies degrees, meaning that there is a variety to choose from. The university of West London offers arounmd 7 different media degrees. The degree that I would need for both jobs is available at both universities, the media and communications degree. The degree itself is 3 years long full time and 5-7 years part time and you need 112 UCAS points for it.

Another job that I would be interested in is being a cameraman. Besides editing I am interested in photography and filming as well learning more about how cameras work. In order to find out more about how to get into filming I would have to do some research. The salary of a cameraman is much high than that of a film editor, this is due to the fact that there is more risk to equipment (cameraman). Also, camerawork is a bit more difficult as you need to know properly how to use a camera. Becoming a professional cameraman requires a diploma from a college. Like a film editor, both jobs require a diploma in a media course, something that I am currently on. Becoming a cameraman would require years of experience handling cameras so I would have to start off by practising and then getting better over time. A course that speciliases in learning about the ways in which cameras work (photography) would be a great support. A good way of learning how to use a camera the right way is to take an apprenticeship at a film/news company and work up from there. A degree isn't a necessary requirement as most TV studios look more for experience. In order get more experience in both editing and filming I could take up work experience or I could shadow members of an existing production company to learn more about how they do their work. Although a degree would massively boost my chances of getting a job as a cameraman, it is not a necessity. As long as I have camerawork experience under my belt that alone should be enough for when I finish this course.
