Week 1: The performing arts students came into the class. As a group we reviewed the ideas of which they had come up with by splitting up into smaller groups. By doing so, we were able to take notes on individual ideas to see which of them could potentially be used for the final project. We also discussed different character ideas, locations and specific storylines within the music video.
Week 2: During this week we visited the dance studio to see if they had thought of or expanded up on any ideas since we last saw them. One particular idea that all of the students seemed to agree on was having the story told through polaroid photos. Their initial idea for the polaroid photographs was to have individual characters moving from photograph to another.
Week 3: This was one of the most crucial weeks for determining how the music would pan out. The dance students gave us the lyrics for the song that they had made and played it to us. By doing this we were able to get a feel for the story of which they had created. This also helped us to apply their previous ideas to see which of them were most applicable. The dance group had also decided that they no longer wanted to use the polaroid photographs and instead wanted to film their dance in a variety of locations.
Week 4: We went back to the dance studio to watch the dance students carry out the chorus dance. While they did this we practiced filming from different angles to see the different ways we could tell their story. This also helped us to see which shot types were the best for what both us and the dance students had in mind.
Recording Days
Day One: For our first filming session we went to King George's Park. We filmed the dance students dancing to the chorus of their song of which was called "Demon Dogs'. We filmed two separate dances which included not only the main group dance but two others. The main group was split into two to film dances in different locations around the park. By splitting into two it allowed us to gather more footage of the dance students, which would help later in the edit.
Day Two: On this day we went to the blue wall to gather more footage of the dance students. We used this day record a couple dance, which heavily links to the story of Demon Dogs and would be crucial for the editing process. We gathered more footage later on in the day by going to the college TV studio. We filmed another version of the chorus dance against green screen but the dance students were wearing red and white to help create contrast. We also filmed another couples dance which would be important for when the music video would be pieced together.
Day Three: On the third and final day we went to the college theatre to shoot a variety of dance scenes. We shot an alternate version of the main chorus dance and filmed the rest of the relationship dances. We used a bench and different dance students to help establish the relationship between the characters of the music video. The purpose of shooting another version of the chorus dance was to help juxtapose with the bright and playful backgrounds of the other scenes as the theatre background was black.
